It may be helpful for you to visit www.big6.com/kids to review the Big 6 process.
If you do not have Internet access at home, please arrange with me times when you can use the library computers. I am very flexible and will arrange a time before, during or after school. Lack of access is not an acceptable excuse for failure to do this assignment.
Library grades for this trimester are based on this assignment!
Please email me at barbarast@spokaneschools.org with questions or call me at 354-3659. I check my email throughout the weekend as well.
Web Site Evaluation Project: Part One
Since we are using the Big 6 research process with this project, students brainstormed what their final product could be. We decided a pamphlet, poster, brochure, newsletter, etc. would work best. We also brainstormed what could/should be included in their final product. Students are creating something that would teach younger children why they shouldn't believe everything they see on the Web and how they can determine if a Web site is useful for research, i.e. accurate, current, unbiased, etc. This needs to be done in a way that is helpful, engaging and appropriate for a young audience. Students must write a short (a paragraph or two) description of what their task is and what form their final product will be. This is due by Thursday, February 16th.
Web Site Evaluation Project: Part Two
Students are to use the Big 6 research process to create a product that they can use with 3rd grade students to educate them about the possible pit falls when using the Web for research. They will make a product that is kid friendly and includes the "why" kids need to be careful as well as advise or tips on how to avoid using "bad" Web sites.
To insure they use the Big 6 process, I have given students Big 6 handouts to complete and return to me by Friday, March 3rd (Monday the 6th for Mrs. Carrick's class). The first 3 handouts focus on steps 2 through 5 of the Big 6. The last handout, step 6 Evaluation, is not due until their final product has been completed and presented.
Web Site Evaluation: Part Three
Students will complete a product to share with third grade students informing them of the potential pit falls of using the Internet for research. The product may be a pamphlet, a newsletter, a poster, a booklet, etc. It must include a "why" section and tips on how to evaluate Web sites for research purposes. This product is due on Friday, March 10th. I cannot extend the deadline as I have to turn grades in the following Monday. Failure to meet the deadline will therefore result in a failing grade.
Web Site Evaluation: Part Four
Students will evaluate themselves using the Big 6 handout on step 6. They will evaluate both the process used in this assignment and the product.
Wishing you safe and successful surfing always!
