Traveling To/From School

Bicycles / Skateboards / Scooters / Rollerblades
Students in grades two through six may ride bikes, scooters, skateboards or rollerblades to school. However, none of these are to be ridden on school grounds, and should be walked through street intersections. For the safety of all students who both ride and walk, we ask that students walk their bikes, skateboards and scooters from Freya to the school grounds. All bicycles must have locks and be parked in the bike racks and all other items are to be stored in coat closets or backpacks. Lincoln Heights Elementary is not responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen items. Students who choose to ride in restricted areas will have their bike, skateboard, scooter, or rollerblades confiscated. These items will be returned to parents upon request.

Walkers
We are most concerned about the safety of students to and from school. Students are to stay on sidewalks and only cross busy streets at intersections where patrols are present. Students are not to cross Freya Street until adult crossing guards are present. Please talk to your child about the dangers associated with walking to and from school and especially walking in all types of weather. It is particularly dangerous during the winter months since ice and snow make stopping distance much greater.

Helmets
A new ordinance was enacted this summer by the Spokane City Council which requires all people to wear a helmet when riding their bikes, skateboards, scooters, etc. on streets, sidewalks, and other public property. Students attending schools located within the City must therefore wear a helmet when riding their bikes, skateboards, or scooters to and from school. The goal of the new City ordinance is to help reduce the number of head injuries among young people by requiring helmet use.

The Spokane Regional Health District's website at www.srhd.org/safety/injury/helmet has excellent information about helmet safety and the appropriate types of helmets to use. Also, the Health District's Helmet Distribution Program provides free helmets for children through dozens of community partners, including fire stations, hospitals, law enforcement, and service clubs. Call 324-3613 for details.

Motor Vehicles
If you drive your student to and from school, please use the east and south sides of the building for loading and unloading. In order to keep our students and your child safe, please adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Always pick your child up on the building side of the street. This will keep students from running across traffic to enter the vehicle. Insist that your child enter from the curb only.
  • Drop off students in designated areas only. Please stay clear of the bus loading zone even when busses are not present when you arrive. Busses arrive quickly and need access to students in order to stay on schedule.
