Discipline Letter   (back to home)

Families of Students of Room 217,

My goal is to help students become/continue to be self-managers who are responsible for their behavior and solve their own problems. Therefore, the following is a copy of our classroom discipline plan for you to read, review with your child, and sign and return by Sept. 14th. The students in our classroom have been practicing our “Classroom Community Guidelines” chart of expectations in our classroom. The following expectations were agreed upon by the students:

1. Be respectful to each other.

2. Be responsible for yourself.

3. Be kind to others and be safe.

4. Use a quiet, whisper voice during independent work times.

5. Follow building, hallway, and recess expectations.

6. Do your best, learn, and have fun!

In addition, the students follow an “Independent Work Time Rubric” daily. This rubric entails the expectations for our work time. They include:

1. Refrain from interrupting conferences and/or small groups.

2. Use soft voices to discuss your work.

3. Come to and leave the meeting area quietly.

4. Take care of yourself and avoid disturbing others.

Bonus points are given as rewards for appropriate behavior at any time during the day. Points can be exchanged for various prizes and privileges at various “buy-back” times throughout the year. Individuals who choose to not follow the expectations set, will be given a warning and if behavior continues, consequences appropriate to the behavior will be given. The following steps will be taken:

1. Verbal warning.

2. If behavior continues, a check will be placed next to the student’s name on my clipboard.

3. If behavior has not stopped, a second check will be placed on the clipboard and the student will complete a time-out form describing his/her behavior and changes he/she plans on making. I will then check this form and keep it in the student’s file.

4. If the behavior has not changed, the student will have a third check recorded on the clipboard and a consequence will be given. Such consequences could include: Phone call home/note home, making up class time at lunch, make up class time lost after school (with parent permission), loss of recess, etc…

At any time, the principal, Mr. Lake, may be called to intervene with the behavior and such behaviors as swearing, fighting, etc…

If you have any questions, please contact me at 354-2918 or by email at AmyT@SpokaneSchools.org. Please sign the form below indicating that you have read our classroom discipline plan. Thank you for your support in your child’s education.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Amy Tollett
