Reader's Workshop   (back to home)
When your child is reading at home, or anywhere for that matter, ask them lots of questions about the text.  "What do you think will happen next?"  "Why is that happening?"  "Why do you think the character is acting that way?"

Open-ended questions are one great way to get your child talking and sharing.  Expert readers get involved in their book...they feel like they are part of the text.  They listen to that inner-voice that asks questions, thinks ahead, and gets emotional!  See what your expert reader is experiencing!

***Oral reading is as significant as silent reading for a long period.  When silent reading, readers tend to skip words that are difficult and lose meaning.  Oral reading, even for a few minutes to start or end a reading session will help your student not only work on their decoding words, but allow you to get a great sense of how they are doing.  :)
