Course Description:

Health is a required course needed for graduation. This semester long course is an approachable, inviting, straight-forward class that provides high school students with the essential body of health information needed to develop their health and wellness knowledge and skills.

Course Overview:

            Unit 1 - A Healthy Foundation

Unit 2 - Nutrition

·         Nutrition and Your Health

·         Managing Weight and Body Composition

 

Unit 3 - Mental and Emotional Health

·         Achieving Good Mental Health

·         Managing Stress and Anxiety

·         Mental and Emotional Problems

                                       

Unit 4 -Personal Care and Body Systems

·         Personal Care and Healthy Behaviors

 

Unit 5 - Tobacco, Alcohol and Other Drug

·         Tobacco

·         Alcohol

·         Medicines and Drugs

 

            Unit 6 - Human Growth and Development (Diseases and Disorders)

·         Communicable Diseases

·         Sexually Transmitted Infections and HIV/AIDS

 

Unit 7 - Injury Prevention and First Aid

·         Injury Prevention and Safe Behaviors

·         First Aid and Emergencies

 

Course Goals:
The course goals focus on providing a class that motivates students to practice wellness for a lifetime and to provide a framework for the development of health literacy skills needed to live a long, productive life. All of which are framed as long term understandings.

Office Hours:
Office hours will be from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Wednesdays. Mrs. Smith will be available via Blackboard Chat during this time.

Required Texts/Materials:
There is not a required textbook for this class, as all resources will be available online. Once enrolled, you will have access to a student user id and password that enables you to use the Glencoe Health 2007 edition. This will be used as our main resource for this class.

Expected Workload:
To be determined.

Grading Policies:
This course will be graded on a total points system. Points earned through the completion of chapter/unit assignments, online journaling, quizzes, tests, group discussion boards and online ?chat? participation.

 

 There will be a total point value for the semester that you may achieve, divided into the total number of points that you accrue, determining your final percentage.

 

The scale is as follows:

 

100-90 = A           89-80 = B              79-70 = C             69-60 = D             59 ? Below = F

 

 Course Prerequisites:
There are no academic prerequisites for this course.

Course Policies

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
It is the responsibility of the student to uphold the highest in academic integrity. 

Students in this course will be expected to comply with the official Spokane District 81 policy regarding Academic Integrity. Any student suspected of violating their obligation for any reason during the semester will be required to participate in the procedural process, initiated at the instructor level.  This may include, but is not limited to, the confiscation of the examination of any individual suspected of violating the policy.

Please note that that we'll be using Turnitin's services to check for plagiarism.

Careful and ethical use of computing resources is the responsibility of every user. Students will be held to a standard of accountability for how they use computers.  The official District Acceptable Use Policy is found here.

This is also an excellent area from which to direct students with computer related questions. Think of this area as a subset of the official policy regarding computing usage at your school. You may want to include a link to the "official" page or site that fully describes where students can obtain help and/or assistance with computer related questions and/or problems.

MAKE UP EXAM POLICY
Although most timelines for work in this course will be quite flexible, there will be deadlines for some items.

When an assignment or test is due by a certain time, there may be extenuating circumstances that may allow for an extension.  Such extensions must be requested in writing.  These extensions may be granted or denied at the discretion of the insructor. 

Remember to take ownership.  Be responsible and strive for the best in your work.
